Is Dermal Filler right for you?

It seems like dermal filler is the talk of the town right now – but how do you know if dermal filler is right for you?
To truly answer this question, you first need to understand the ageing process.

What happens to our face and skin when we age?

Three main things occur during the ageing process:

  1. Bone loss
Bone loss generally begins in your 30’s, causing slack skin as well as puckering of the skin around your mouth. At this time there is also some cartilage loss in the nose, causing drooping of the nasal tip.
  2. Decreased volume of fat pads
Loss of fat below the skin (what dermatologists call the subcutaneous layer) in your cheeks, temples, chin, nose, and eye area begins to occur, which can result in loosening skin, sunken eyes and a “skeletal” appearance.
  3. Changes in skin laxity
The loss of elastic tissue (elastin and collagen) in the skin causes your skin to become slack and hang loosely.

This trifecta is what makes us look older.

How can you address the signs of ageing?

The good news is that premium dermal filler and other anti-ageing treatments can address all of these issues, not only preventing you from appearing “aged” but also to turn back the clock and make you look years younger whilst still maintaining a natural looking appearance.

But how does it work? Let’s dive deeper.

What is dermal filler?

Dermal filler is not collagen, it is made from hyaluronic acid which is made up of sugar crystals known as polysaccharides. These are already present in our skin and tissues, however, the production of them reduces as we age. Things such as sun damage and smoking can speed up the metabolism of our tissue based hyaluronic acid, making us appear older.

As hyaluronic acid is already naturally produced in the body, our skin can absorb the hyaluronic acid from dermal fillers without problems.

Are there other types of fillers?

Yes! At The Skin Lab Brisbane, we offer three main types of fillers to suit any age, skin concern and treatment preference. Whilst this post is focusing on Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers, we also offer Hydrating Fillers (known as Hybrid Dermal Fillers) and Collagen Biostimulant Fillers.

  • Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers
Provide immediate results and are reversable
  • Collagen Biostimulant Fillers
Are irreversible and provide better results over time
  • Hybrid Fillers
Designed to rehydrate and strengthen the skin without adding volume

If you aren’t sure whether dermal fillers are right for you, one of these options may be better suited to your needs instead.

How does dermal filler work?

Dermal Filler works by filling hollow spaces underneath the skin, which is why fine lines and wrinkles are immediately improved. These fillers also work by holding a thousand times its weight in water, causing your body to naturally increase collagen production.

This means that dermal fillers are the perfect way to wake up your skin’s natural processes, instead of requiring the filler to do all the work.

How long does dermal filler last?

This answer depends on your treatment as there are many grades of dermal filler. For example, the dermal filler used in the lip area would be different than the filler used in the cheeks or forehead. Depending on the type of filler used, dermal fillers can last up to 2 years.

The wide variety of dermal fillers available means that you can receive the perfect customised treatment based on what you’re looking for.

Will I look worse when my dermal fillers dissolve?

No. In fact, the opposite is true!
Because dermal fillers stimulate your body’s own natural collagen production, you’ll notice that your skin quality, texture, and shape will appear much more youthful – even when the fillers have completely dissolved and despite being older in age.
The frequency of treatments is completely up to you and your skin goals.

Does it matter where I go to get filler?

Yes, absolutely. Dermal filler is an S4 medication governed by the TGA, meaning that it can only be prescribed by a medical doctor. There are also many different types of techniques to inject dermal filler – some much more advanced than others. Just like 2 artists using the same paint brush, one can create an average-looking painting whilst the other creates a masterpiece. The same is true with who is injecting you.

Will anyone know I have had dermal fillers?

If it’s done properly, they’ll only know if you tell them!

You will look refreshed and glowing and instead of someone thinking you’ve had injectables, they’ll probably think you are well rested or just came back from a holiday!

I want to get dermal fillers, what’s the first step?

Before any cosmetic injectables, it’s important that you have a cosmetic injectables consultation with an experienced cosmetic physicians and doctor to discuss your needs, wants and to determine whether the treatment is right for you.

During your 30-45 minute consultation, all of your questions will be answered, and you’ll learn about the ageing process, why we use different types of cosmetic injections, what options are best suited to you and we’ll work with you to create a tailored treatment plan.
