Skin Cancer Check Brisbane

Our specialist dermatologists and skin cancer doctors are trusted experts in comprehensive, full-body skin checks, skin spot checks and melanoma detection.

Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. More than 430,000 Australians are treated a year for skin cancers. Of these, over 10,500 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed. Each year, there are around 1,600 deaths from melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.

Skin cancer checks play a vital role in the success of your skin health, as early skin cancer detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes and enhance overall prognosis. At The Skin Lab, we highly recommend an annual full-body skin check as part of your self-care routine.

What to expect

Self skin examination - what to look for?

Did you know you can take part of your skin cancer care into your own hands? Regular self skin examination is essential in addition to your regular skin cancer checks. What to look for:

  • Non-healing sores.
  • Any spot that bleeds repeatedly without obvious reason or from minimal trauma, especially if this has lasted for more than a few weeks.
  • Itch specific to a lesion (especially if this has lasted for more than a few weeks).
  • The ‘ugly duckling’. Any spot that doesn’t look like other common spots you have seen on your own body

What skin cancers does The Skin Lab check for?

We look for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers at our skin check clinic in Brisbane. Melanoma, known for its aggressive nature, is meticulously examined during our skin checks to ensure early detection and timely intervention. Other skin cancers include squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. These common skin cancers, while generally less aggressive than melanoma, are equally essential to detect early for effective treatment and optimal outcomes.

How often do I need to have a skin check?

Early detection is important. Dermatologists and Skin Cancer Doctors are experts in detecting skin cancers early and securing the early diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers. At the Skin Lab, we highly recommend an annual full-body skin check as part of your self-care routine for everyone over 30 years and 6 months for patients with fair skin or a previous history of skin cancer.

I’m booked in for a skin check. Do I need to do anything beforehand?

It’s helpful to remove your makeup prior to a skin check. We understand that this is sometimes not possible if you are coming from work so we do provide makeup remover wipes or cleanser if necessary.

What happens during my treatment?

A full-body skin cancer check means exactly that – your entire body is examined by your doctor to identify any suspicious-looking spots or lesions. We ask you to remove your clothing but to keep on your underwear. During this appointment, all freckles and moles are examined by our experienced doctors to ensure they are not cancerous, precancerous or could lead to another health risk.

What happens afterwards?

Following your examination at our Brisbane skin cancer clinic, any suspicious-looking moles or freckles will be addressed by your doctor in further detail. If needed, your doctor can perform a biopsy for additional analysis.

At The Skin Lab, we offer services to remove skin cancers if any are found during your skin check with us. Your doctor will be able to book you in as soon as possible to receive your skin cancer diagnosis.
