GLP-1 Weight Loss and Your Skin: Understanding “Ozempic Face”

Why your face may look different after weight loss, and where to start.

Noticing a change in your face is one thing. Knowing what to do about it is another.

Significant weight loss, including weight loss while using GLP-1 medicines, can reduce facial fullness and make lines or loose skin more noticeable. Often called “Ozempic face”, these changes vary from person to person. They are not a medical diagnosis, not inevitable, and not unique, despite the name, to any one medication. In fact, anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight, by any method, has the potential to experience similar changes.

At The Skin Lab Brisbane, we start with a simple question: is the concern your skin, the volume beneath it, or both?

The answer helps us choose treatments with a clear purpose.

What Changes Are You Noticing?

Your face may look less full, while your skin may feel different too. During a consultation, we look at three things together:

Fullness: Have your cheeks or temples become more hollow?
Firmness: Are you noticing looser skin around your jawline or neck?
Skin quality: Are texture, pigmentation, dryness, or fine lines part of your concern?

These differences matter. A treatment that improves texture is not necessarily the right treatment for hollow cheeks.

Which GLP-1 Medicines Are Used in Australia?

Names you may recognise include:

  • Ozempic and Wegovy: semaglutide.
  • Mounjaro: tirzepatide.
  • Trulicity: dulaglutide.

These are related medicines with different approved uses. They are not all prescribed for weight management.

Saxenda, or liraglutide, is another familiar name. Its Australian supply was discontinued from December 2025 with remaining stock available until exhausted.

Any decisions about your medication should be discussed with your prescribing practitioner. Our focus here is your skin.

What Can Help Your Skin After Weight Loss?

For some people, the priority is smoother texture and firmer-looking skin. Selected laser treatments can stimulate collagen, a protein that helps give skin its structure, while improving its surface. Collagen-stimulating injectables, also known as biostimulators, may also have a role in supporting the skin by encouraging new collagen production over time.

For others, changes in facial fullness need a different assessment. Improving the skin does not replace lost facial fat. Where appropriate, carefully selected injectable treatments can help restore fullness and facial support where volume has reduced. This adds volume and structure rather than regrowing lost facial fat.

At The Skin Lab Brisbane, your clinician helps identify where laser treatments and/or skincare may have a useful role, coordinating this through assessment with our medical aesthetic team. This allows us to consider your skin and facial support together, rather than recommend separate treatments in isolation.

Understanding your skin treatment options during and after weight loss can make the next step clearer. The goal is to address what concerns you, while keeping your skin quality and facial proportions in mind.

Should You Wait Until Your Weight Stabilises?

You can begin planning before your weight has stabilised.

An early assessment allows us to discuss your skin, establish priorities and begin supporting skin quality and healthy collagen production. Dry, dull or dehydrated-looking skin can also be an early focus, with tailored skincare to improve hydration and maintain a healthy skin barrier. Other concerns may be better reviewed later, as your weight and facial fullness stabilise.

Early planning is not a guarantee against facial changes. It helps decide what is worth addressing now and what is better reviewed later. A good skin plan should evolve as your needs change.  The value of planning is having a clear starting point, protecting skin quality, and knowing when to reassess.

Start With a Senior Laser Therapist Consultation

You do not need to work out which treatment you need before booking.

A Senior Laser Therapist at The Skin Lab Brisbane will assess your skin, discuss your goals, and explain the most relevant options. Where medical assessment would be helpful, we can coordinate this within your care.

You will leave your consultation with a clear understanding of your treatment options, likely recovery and its duration, and costs, including what may be appropriate now and what is better reviewed later.
