Ultra Violet Light Therapy

At The Skin Lab, our experienced Dermatologists offer ultraviolet radiation, or phototherapy, to treat a range of severe skin conditions including psoriasis and dermatitis. It is a commonly used treatment that can reduce your discomfort and inflammatory symptoms with a number of short treatments over a period of several months.

* First-time customers require an initial consultation.

What to expect

Is it safe?

Yes – Ultraviolet Light Therapy has been used by medical doctors and dermatologists for decades to treat uncomfortable and debilitating skin disorders, most commonly psoriasis. Treatments involve only short doses of ultraviolet light, under the supervision of our experienced doctors. Courses should only be carried out in those who receive regular skin checks and closely follow the advice of their treating physician.

How many treatments do I need?

A series of treatments will be required to effectively treat your condition and relieve your symptoms, and this will vary according to every individual. Generally, a course of 10 treatments is given over a period of several weeks, with check-ins of your progress made throughout your course. Some maintenance treatments may also be required once your series is complete.

How much does the treatment cost?

In most cases, this treatment is covered as a medical treatment under Medicare. The cost of your consultation is $250, with a Medicare rebate of $76.80. If you already have a referral, you can book in for treatment with one of our Dermatologists. If you do not have a referral already, please book a consultation with Dr Heather Jenkins in order to receive one. You can then book a treatment with our Dermatologists from there.

What happens during my treatment?

The treatment area is exposed to UV light for a short period of time, during which you might feel a warming sensation. If treating the body, we will ask that you remove any clothing covering your treatment area and step into our medical-grade, full body Ultraviolet Light Therapy capsule. If treating the hands or feet, you will simply insert these into our smaller UV capsule designed for these areas. Following your treatment, you are free to resume your normal activities.

What can I expect afterwards?

We will recommend limiting sun exposure and using a high protection broad spectrum sunscreen daily throughout your treatment series. Although, this is something we always recommend for all clients! In some cases, you may experience some redness or itching in the treated area – this is completely normal. With regular treatments, you should soon find some significant improvement and relief in your condition.
